Not due to hit theaters until July, the promotional trailers for Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming film Pacific Rim have already begun dropping. From the looks of it, this film has plenty of fast-paced action and a large-scale Hollywood feel. If the Hellboy films are any indication of how Del Toro will handle the action sequences, then sign me up buddy. Personally, I’m still waiting on Hellboy III (please, God, please) and speaking of which, Ron Perlman will have a starring role in this film as well as Hannibal Chau.
Pacific Rim is set in a mech and kaiju rampant world where alien monsters emerge from the mysterious and unexplored depths of the Pacific Ocean out of a cross-dimensional rift. So, of course, humanity’s only way to fight giant alien monsters is with equally large robots, duh. There is a scene where voice actress Ellen McLain, who voiced GLaDOS from video game Portal and Portal 2, counts down and instructs the mech pilots over an intercom for launch, and it just gave me goose bumps.

The poster of the pilots on the docking bay in front of the mech reminds me of a shot from anime Neon Genesis Evangelion which was rumored to be in the works a while back with WETA attached to the project. But, since that project seems to have been dropped, this might be the closest thing we are going to get to a NGE movie.
I’m curious to see how Del Toro deals with this subgenre. I love his work, and this is perhaps the largest stage worked with so far so hopefully he makes it his own. If you have or ever had any love for Voltron, Godzilla, Gamera, Mothra… Macross, Gundam Wing, Gigantor… Big O, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Transformers… or anything similar then get your ass to the theaters July 12, 2013 for Pacific Rim. Mine will totally be there, but the first sign of robot testicles and I am peacing out.
